Window Sill Extensions

Hmmm my stand up overhead light looks like something out of a 50's movie set and you can not see that the pole is actually a pretty green that goes with the wall color.  Oh well, I am not a movie set photographer or a designer.

I love to put house plants on my window sills.  They act as a screen to give me privacy while growing and giving a sense of hominess to my living room, green calmness to my office and serenity to my guest bedroom.  The other side of the house does not have many windows and is not the warm side of the house. But there was a problem.  The window sills were not wide enough to accommodate a large plant.  It occurred to me that if I widened the sill I would have more room and the large plants would be happy and continue to grow.

Wider sills would also make space for Mister T to sit in the window and watch his world go by. I was very concerned that he would fall with the narrow sills and a couple of time he did fall.  Being a good mother I had to come up with an alternative plan.  I saw those ledges that are sold as cat platforms and I thought they looked poorly made.  With wider sills Mister T can sit safely in the window and watch what is going on outside and pretend he is tall.

If you would like to know more about how to widen your window sills please go to my published article and check it out.

What a good idea! I'm always looking for more space for my plants.

Your new sill looks fantastic. After reading your article, I still have a few questions. What is the length of your new sill? From the pictures it looks about 5 feet. And when you nailed the board to the window, do you mean into the old sill?

Thanks!
