Hummingbirds Have Arrived!

I just saw the first hummingbird of the season outside my kitchen window!  I am so excited.  It was brown and tan which is a Rufous Hummingbird.  Rufous is a variety that is found along the Pacific Northwest coast line and is brown. When they get excited they form a red neck that actually shines.

This is not my picture sadly.  It came from a Hummingbird website.

I know the swallow will be right behind these swift fliers.  Oh spring really is coming!  I love the hummingbirds especially when they hover around my head when I sit on my patio.  I will have to fill the hummingbird feeder so they have some nectar.  They will be busy building a new nest and will be hungry.

I saw my very first hummingbird last year, and I thought it was an insect at first when it flew in front of my face! hehe. They're so quick!

I could watch hummingbirds for hours! They mesmerize me. They mesmerize my cat, too! ;-)

Have a wonderful week!

I live in southeast Texas, about 90 miles from Houston, and have not yet seen my first hummingbird of the season. It should be happening soon though. Yea!

If you do not yet have a large number of hummingbirds visiting your feeder yet, I would suggest that you start out only filling the feeder half full. This will hopefully allow the feeder to be emptied of nectar solution before it will have time to spoil. Once a greater number of hummingbirds visit the feeder, then you can fill the feeder up completely.

I have invented a wearable hummingbird feeder -- it takes hummingbird enjoyment to a whole new level! . . . and I have had a male Anna's hang around all winter guarding and protecting what I am sure he assumes is HIS property. Here is a 2 min youtube clip of the feeder in action.

You are so lucky. I live in the northeast.I won't see my first hummingbird until May. You are certainly getting me excited though. I can't wait.
