Picking Early Berries

Stopped at a yard sale yesterday and while driving home I noticed some ripe berries. I stopped the car and went out to investigate. Sure enough there were some thimble berries both red and black varieties. My mother was with me and had a bag of groceries in the car. She emptied out a plastic container and I went to work. I picked two cups of berries..ok we ate a few just to check them out.

There wasn't enough to make a pie or cobbler so I decided on canned quick bread. I modified a zucchini bread recipe by simply leaving out zucchini and putting in the washed berries. The berries were pretty fragile so the batter got pink quickly. My buddy and next door neighbor, Haylee, helped me out. She likes to come and visit and is always ready to lend a hand with whatever I am doing. She is all of seven years old but a great conversationalist! Tomorrow we will open one of the jars and have a tea party.

Mom just came over so I asked her to go and check out the jars cooling on the stove. She told me she thought they were pickles! Do you think they look like pickles? Please leave me a comment below.

My friends and neighbors, Haylee and Luke.

Bless you Madam Chow! Now it's two against one with my mother. I will tell her and she will get a good laugh out of it.

What are you talking about? They aren't even green says Haylee. She also says she is eight years old. Oops my mistake!
Luke, her four year old brother says, "No they aren't pickuuuus!". He is too cute with his red hair and freckles.
