passing of an artichoke

There has been a stately artichoke plant in my garden for four years. Annually it would come to life and grow up to five feet tall and spawn many chokes. It was sort of like the old woman who lived in a shoe and had so many children she did not know what to do.

This year my friend did not come back to life. I believe one of the cold snaps we had did her in. I am really going to miss the old gal as I marveled at how such a plant could grow so majestically and create such yummy offspring. I loved picking the chokes and sharing them with neighbors. They would always be so surprised to see them and more surprised they came from my garden in the neighborhood. Most people around here don't seem to have them in their gardens.

So I will go and get another plant this week. I will plant it in another spot and allow the other spot to heal and build up it's nutrients again. Goodbye old choke, you will be missed.

We had a big artichoke plant like that once, too. You are right - after having a plant like that so long, they feel like family.
